New Ways of Working #3
It’s the third edition of New Ways of Working already! As usual I’m going to open by sharing the purpose of this newsletter:
To help you to explore new ways of working.
To do this I’m going to share one article, video, tool and podcast. Short and sweet, simple and practical. Here goes:
Blog 📝
So much of the writing and thinking around new ways of working has a focus on structures and processes. To do this work well we have to focus equally on mindsets, ways of being, culture, and how we relate to each other. Lisa Gill explains further in this Corporate Rebels blog (9 mins). This article is gold.
Video 🎥
This TED Talk by Patty McCord is nothing short of wonderful. It touches on themes from Lisa’s article including how we relate to each other and creating an adult-to-adult dynamic. Patty was chief talent officer of Netflix for 14 years. Five stars for 8 lessons on building a company people enjoy working for (4 mins) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Tool 🔧
One excellent tool that I’ve seen help shift our way of being, culture, and mindset is circle meetings. Confession: until I came across this way of meeting I hadn’t learnt to listen. I now use this technique a lot because it makes meetings way better. And the best bit? It couldn’t be simpler! So give them a go, here’s a how-to guide (3 mins).
Podcast 📻
This podcast from Brave New Work is about a delicious alternative to tedious old decision-making techniques such as top-down and consensus that so often leave a bad taste. And it incorporates talking in ‘rounds’ (circles)! It’s called consent decision-making and it’s a staple in many progressive orgs. I encourage you to give it a go after you’ve tried a few circle meetings. This podcast tells you all about it (50 mins).
