New Ways of Working #4
Welcome to the fourth edition of the New Ways of Working newsletter. As always, the purpose is:
To help you to explore new ways of working.
This week I’m sharing an exciting new course, an unmissable free event, one of my favourite tools, and an awesome video featuring seven of the world’s leading thinkers and writers in this space. Here goes:
Online Course 🤓
A couple of places remain on New Ways of Working: Made Simpler. The course objective is for you to enjoy your job more and be an even better member of your team.
You’ll learn collaboration and leadership skills, how to hold better meetings, and how to make distributed decisions faster. You’ll feel more comfortable giving feedback, know what’s getting in the way of being a great team that does awesome work, and work on the mindset needed to make change happen.
Join us! We get going on Monday 26 October.
Free Event 🗓️
I’m pretty excited about the second online Authors Fishbowl Discussion! Once again it brings together authors of the best books on new ways of working. The theme for the discussion is New ways of working sound great! Where do we start? It’s going to be an awesome conversation! You can get your free tickets here.
Tool 🔧
It’s the fourth edition of this newsletter so definitely time to share one of my favourite set of tools - Liberating Structures. These offer alternatives to tired old meeting formats, helping you to:
Liberate as oppose to control meetings; distribute control among all participants; provide an equal opportunity for everyone to participate; ensure no voice is muted, rejected, overlooked or dominating; cut through hierarchy and power dynamics; and tap the energy & potential of the whole group.
You can read all about them here. My favourites that work well online are 1-2-4-ALL, Impromptu Networking, 15% Solutions, Troika, and of course Fishbowl. Give them a go! And be sure to download the free app (linked in the article).
Video 🎥
If you missed the first Authors Fishbowl Discussion then it’s well worth catching up before the second - the feedback has been lovely. Consider watching it together with your team at an online lunch and learn - it’ll offer heaps of food for thought.
If you found this useful and haven’t already then do subscribe and share 🙏
Until next time, you can find me here.
About Mark
I’m a new ways of working consultant, coach, and facilitator. For years I’ve been practising progressive ways of working whilst synthesising the mountain of information out there.
I came across new ways of working in New Zealand in 2015 after spending a decade in traditional workplaces. It was the first time I found consistent fulfilment in work. This experience was with a law firm and community organisation that features on the distinguished Corporate Rebels ‘bucket list’. Once you taste this way of working, it’s impossible to go back. I’ve now been a member of staff in three organisations that embraced progressive leadership, so come with plenty of lived experience.
I’m also co-founder of Reinventing Work, a decentralised global movement for people interested in more human-centred, purposeful and self-organised ways of working. So far we’ve gathered in 25 cities across five continents, including in Bristol (where it began) London, Berlin, Melbourne, Montreal and New York. I’ve delivered online content to hundreds, spoken about new ways of working at The University of Oxford, and facilitated at Meaning Fringe. I’ve also appeared on the wonderful Leadermorphosis podcast and the University of the West of England’s MSc Occupational Psychology programme discussing the future of work.
